Students will be able to:

  1. Comprehend the functioning of cardiopulmonary bypass and perfusion systems in organ transplants in paediatric and adult cardiac surgery.
  2. Comprehend the problems that may arise during the operation of perfusion systems, and their solutions.

    Abilities

    Cognitive – Application

    Students will be able to:

    2.1   Install and maintain the heart-lung machine in accordance with the perfusion application steps and characteristics in cardiac and cardiopulmonary surgery, and organ transplants.

    2.2   Perform the preparation steps, checklist items, heparin administration, and cannulation prior to installation and operation of the cardiopulmonary bypass system.

    2.3   Perform the required checks, motorisation, blood pressure and temperature checks, fluid replacement, and termination of the bypass after the operation of cardiopulmonary bypass system.

    Competencies

    Competence of Working Independently and Taking Responsibility

    Students will be able to:

  3. 3.1   Recall the responsibilities of a perfusionist in an open heart surgery; install the blood circulation machines, and administer and monitor the required medicines to ensure that the organs are perfused (fed) during surgery under the supervision of a specialist physician such as a cardiovascular surgeon or an anaesthetist; and communicate effectively with patients and their relatives as well as other health disciplines.

    3.2   Explain the possible errors, accidents, and required precautions during open heart surgery.

    3.3   Carry out scientific studies in their field, and acknowledge their academic and social responsibilities.

    Students will be able to:

  4. 4.1   Acknowledge the necessity of lifelong learning; acquire the ability to follow the scientific and technological developments and improve themselves continually.

    4.2   Follow the technological developments related to the devices used in the field, and attend events such as trainings, seminars, etc. for the use of these devices.

    Communicative and Social Competence

    Students will be able to:

  5. 5.1   Express their thoughts on the matters related to their fields orally and in writing at the level of basic knowledge and skills they have.

    5.2   Follow the rules of written and oral communication.

    5.3   Do homework / prepare reports.

    5.4   Make oral presentations.

    5.5   Share their thoughts on the matters and solutions to the problems related to their field with both experts and non-experts.

    5.6   Do guided studies.

    5.7   Share their thoughts on the matters and solutions to the problems related to their field with both experts and non-experts during internships.

    5.8   Use a foreign language at least at ELP A2 General Level to follow the new developments in their field, and communicate with their colleagues.
